About

Northern Panay, which faces the Sibuyan Sea, is replete with marine resources that sustain the livelihood of the locals in this area. For years, these communities have developed their own fishing practices unique to every locality, contributing to the rich cultural landscape of the Philippines. With the intrusion of modern technology, these fishing practices are becoming at risk of extinction. The goal of this project is to document traditional fishing practices and make them accessible to the greater public through social media in the hope of stirring interest and awareness among the locals of the rich tradition and practices in Northern Panay.

Social media has been an effective platform on information dissemination and learning. Thus, with this page, we hope to document surviving traditional fishing practices and share them to everyone in an effort to educate them about the rich culture and tradition we have here in Northern Panay island.

Pagpanagat: Traditional Fishing Practices of Northern Panay Island is a project funded by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts to document and highlight (through Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) ecologically sustainable fishing practices of cultural communities in Northern Panay which faces the Sibuyan Sea. Specifically, it aims to:

  1. Identify existing traditional fishing practices and gears in Northern Panay.
  2. Document the existing fishing practices and gears through photography and videography.
  3. Make a compilation of these existing traditional fishing practices and gears to preserve local knowledge and tradition.
  4. Disseminate these cultural practices through various social media platforms (s.a. Facebook, Youtube, and blogs, among others).
  5. Create and publish an open access ebook accessible through online platform.
