Do you ever wonder how fisher folks catch a huge batch of fish? Surambaw is one hand-made, all-natural machine that they use to make fishing more efficient, at least in the traditional sense.
Surambaw is a fishing implement made of bamboo to catch a huge
batch of fish. A man-made, hand-operated bamboo machine is attached to a raft.
If you take a closer look, it is like a giant version of a fishing rod. A
slightly inclined bamboo is connected to the raft. The inclined bamboo in turn
holds another curved bamboo which holds a huge net, which submerged on the
river and later pulled when filled with fish. A light bulb is attached on the
bamboo to attract the fish. When fisher folks think that there are enough fish
gathered above the net, they would pull the bamboo and the net would be
elevated together with the fish. You will usually found the surambaw in huge
rivers or on break waters. Sometimes, they have "nipa" roofs where fisher folks
rest while waiting for the net to be filled.
